Privacy Policy

YourVoice.Now is a civic-engagement service operated by yourvoice.now LLC. It helps people follow legislation before the U.S. Congress, take a position on it, and contact their representatives.

This policy covers the YourVoice.Now mobile apps (iOS and Android) and this website. Our bills reference site, bills.yourvoice.now, has its own policy because it collects far less — it has no accounts.

The short version

We collect what the app needs to work: your account details, the state and district that determine your representatives, and the positions you take. When you contact a representative, the app hands you to that office’s own contact form — we do not carry the message and we do not see it. We use a third-party analytics service to understand how the app is used. We do not sell your data, we do not run ads, and we do not share your information with political campaigns, parties or data brokers. You can delete everything at any time.

What we collect

Account information

Your name, email address and a hashed password. Required — you cannot use the app without an account.

Location

Your state and congressional district, which is how we work out who represents you. You can type this in yourself. If you grant the location permission, we use an approximate (coarse) location once, at signup, to pre-fill the state — we do not track your location, and we never transmit or store GPS coordinates.

Your civic activity

The bills you follow, the support or oppose positions you take, and which bills and representatives you have viewed.

Contacting a representative

Nothing you write. The app does not send messages on your behalf — it opens the office’s own official contact form, and what you type there goes from you to that office without passing through us. We record that you opened a contact form, and for which representative.

Identity verification

If you choose to verify that you are a constituent, our verification provider, Plaid, checks your documents and returns the outcome to us. We store that outcome and the state and district it confirmed. The documents themselves, and the date of birth and government identifiers on them, stay with Plaid — we never receive them.

Device information

Your device model, operating system version, app version and IP address. If you enable notifications, a push token for your device.

We do not collect your postal address, phone number, date of birth, party registration, contacts, photos, browsing history, or an advertising identifier. We do not collect crash reports.

Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the app and site are used — which screens people reach, which bills get read, where people get stuck — so we can improve them. PostHog processes this on our behalf. It does not sell your data or use it for advertising.

PostHog receives:

• Screens and pages you open, and the order you open them in
• Actions you take: bills viewed, positions taken, bills followed, representatives viewed, and when you open a representative’s contact form
• Your account identifier, state and district
• Your device model, OS version and IP address, which PostHog converts to an approximate, city-level location

PostHog never receives your name or your email address, and never anything you write to a representative’s office — that does not reach us either. In the apps, automatic screen capture and session recording are switched off.

On this website, analytics requests are served from our own domain rather than PostHog’s, which means browser tracker-blockers generally will not stop them. We honour the “Do Not Track” and “Global Privacy Control” signals — if your browser sends either, we collect no analytics from you at all.

Turning analytics off

In the apps, go to Settings and turn off Share Usage Analytics. That stops collection and deletes the analytics profile associated with you. The app keeps working exactly as before.

Who else sees your data

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with political campaigns, parties, PACs or data brokers. It reaches other parties only in these cases:

• Representatives’ offices receive whatever you submit through their own contact forms, on their own sites and under their own privacy policies. We do not send it for you, and we do not get a copy.
• Service providers that run the service for us: hosting, database, email delivery, push notifications, analytics (PostHog) and identity verification (Plaid). They may only process data on our instructions.
• Legal requirements — if we are compelled by valid legal process, or need to act to prevent fraud or harm.

Aggregate, non-identifying figures — such as “62% of constituents in this district support this bill” — may be shown publicly or to representatives’ offices. These are counts, and cannot be traced back to you.

Your rights

• Delete everything — Settings → Delete Account in the app, or see how to delete your account.
• See what we hold — email us and we will send you the data on file.
• Correct it — change your details in the app, or tell us what is wrong.
• Opt out of analytics — the Settings toggle described above.
• Turn off notifications — in Settings, or in your device’s system settings.

If you live in California, the European Union, the United Kingdom, or anywhere else with specific privacy rights, those rights apply to us and the mechanisms above are how to exercise them. We do not discriminate against anyone for exercising them.

How long we keep it

We keep your account data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we remove it. Analytics records are retained for up to 12 months. Anything you sent to an office through its own contact form is held by that office under its own policy — we never had a copy, and we cannot recall it.

Security

All traffic between the apps, this site and our servers is encrypted with TLS. Passwords are hashed, never stored in readable form. Authentication tokens are held in the device’s secure storage — the Keychain on iOS, encrypted storage on Android.

Children

YourVoice.Now is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.

Changes

If we update this policy we will change the effective date above. For changes that materially affect how we use data we already hold, we will notify account holders by email before the change takes effect.
